What is lovely about West Hill is the beautiful surroundings, the care and attention the community pay to their homes, and substantial investment that is made by them to ensure this east Devon woodland village retains its prestigious and naturally idyllic surroundings. In April 2017 West Hill formed its own Parish.
Driving through the village, you see why West Hill presents itself so perfectly, there is a local village shop, with post office. A local Primary School, and transport directly linking residents to the surrounding villages of Ottery St Mary just 2 miles away, Honiton 10 miles away, and of course Exeter, just 8 miles away. All conveniently reached via the A30.
Walks through glorious hills, and countryside are plentiful. There are some local club/activities but to enjoy independent shops/restaurants or amenities you do need to prepare to commute a little further. Hence why our editorial reaches out to what is best to offer, in the surrounding vicinity.
The Doctors surgery is based in Ottery St Mary, Coleridge Medical Centre. Along with a variety of local shops, and supermarkets. LED offers a variety of exercise classes, gym and recreational events.
The Rusty Pig has to have a special mention as this delightful venue positioned in Ottery St Mary, is owned and run by Robin Rea, a local and dedicated owner with attention to detail, and a passion for sourcing local produce, and shared by head chef Mark Russell. From an open plan, social dining experience downstairs with no set menu, an inventive concoction of beautifully presented food, and local ales, wines, to a private function room upstairs either will see pure excitement and delivery of the most delicious food ever. We highly rate the Rusty Pig and all it has to offer.
Also close by and worthy of a mention are the village eateries and pubs, The Golden Lion at Tipton St John, and the Thirsty Farmer at Whimple. Both offering an excellent choice of menu, and run with great passion providing a fantastic service to their customers.
A little further, but worth the little over 9 mile drive. Believe me the drive exposes one of my favourite views across Devon countryside. A venue which is simply spiffing, is the Deer Park Hotel. With a glorious setting, catering for lunches that will certainly get your taste buds ticking, while taking in the most beautiful of settings. Wedding and Corporate events are popular here, and it is easy to see why many visit or stay here so frequently. Mark Godfrey is a remarkable man, who takes great pride in his venue and his team, they impress anyone who visits.
