Exeter in Focus… Ide

Ide is a glorious, idyllic village, with a close and spirited community. The surrounding countryside make this a beautiful village, that is very easy to write about.

As you approach the village, the homes range from older cottages to newer renovations, and as you walk through Ide, the community spirit is evident with a local shop & Post Office, primary school, Ide Memorial Hall, Parish Church of St Ida and two impressive local pubs.

The village itself leads up to acres of fields and Ide is surrounded by local farms, and views that look towards Exeter, then over to Belvedere Tower and Haldon Forest.

With the abundance of styles of property within the village. From 2 or 3-bedroom Grade II listed cottages, to more modern semi or detached houses, and thatch chocolate box cottages that ooze English style. When properties do come to market, they are snapped up very quickly and it is a joy to help families lay roots or stay within the village.

Residents raised over £70,000, along with funding and grants to build the Ide Community Shop and Post Office, which is a valued and indispensable part of village life. It is run by the community for the community, with a wide range of produce and services and acts as a meeting place and a community resource.

Ide offers numerous activities for the community be actively involved in, including a choir, arts club, yoga, football, toddler groups and folk clubs.

The village enjoys two local pubs, the Huntsman Inn, at the bottom of the village, a family run pub, with a wonderful menu and fantastic atmosphere. This thatched pub, has been in the heart of the village and next to the ford, with a beautiful lane of cottages for years. The Poachers Inn is another great village pub, with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and wide selection of beers. Outside is a large beer garden and their fireworks display is one of the best, in my view.

My own children have attended Ide Primary School, so I can vouch for the school’s wonderful setting, teachers, and the ethos of the school and their commitment to education and nurturing respect. It is a small primary school and the Head, Sharon Tarr is doing a splendid job.

Families and children can enjoy many activities organised by West Town Farm. This is not just a farm, the owner Andy Bragg and his team are extremely passionate and work hard to welcome the community and invite the school for regular educational visits.

Average Sales and Lettings values for Ide, Exeter

Ide is subject to very high demand, and premium prices, with a population of just over 500 residents. Exeter as the crow flies is just over 1 mile away, so is a short commute and easily walked or driven and there is regular public transport. The proximity to the City and the buzz of what Exeter has to offer, balanced with the peaceful and picturesque village makes Ide very popular with families.

My Favourites

Recreation / Amenities
Ide Community Store
I love the Ide Community Store, Elizabeth and the other volunteers are just lovely. The selection of locally sourced food, organic vegetables and fruit is endless, and nothing is ever too much trouble. They have a selection of fine wines, cards and plants for sale.

Ide Primary School
A delightful, happy place for children to grow, with only 136 students, it offers a quiet and close village setting where children can be children. Sharon Tarr is a wonderful Head Teacher and all the teachers are a credit to the school.

West Town Farm
I love the activities enjoyed here, especially the feasts put on and Apple & Pumpkin days.
On February the 21st Nigel Hewitt is taking a bird walk around the beautiful farm and countryside.

Pubs
The Huntsman Inn
Carol & Brian have been landlords in this family run, traditional thatch pub for a year and they are so lovely. Brian has an infectious sense of humour and the pub feels really welcoming and best of all serves delicious food with an extensive menu. *Book in advance for a Sunday Lunch or you will be disappointed!
